December and January was an extremely busy period on the golf course with a large volume of play. The course held up quite well and after having an extended dry period in the months at the end of last year there was some much welcomed rain in January that brought the course back to life. The month of January provided us with the highest total of monthly rainfall since June last year. Growth in the rough was non existent in the month of December and run was aplenty on fairways. With the nice rainfall we are now back to mowing rough weekly and doing some extra hours to keep it all neat and tidy on a consistent basis. The greens are also holding up nicely with some of the hot days we have been experiencing. Additional irrigation and hand watering is required this time of year to keep them in good health.
Two large trees were removed earlier this week in the left rough on the 15th hole. Both had died off and the one just past the small pond had a large branch fall from the top recently and get hung up. They have now been removed to eliminate any potential safety issues and the stumps grinded down.
We have been trialling some motion sensors on greens that the corellas typically go after in the summer months. These sensors are currently on the 6th, 8th and 10th greens and seem to be helping with deterring the birds so far. Like everything we try, there is no silver bullet but we'll give it a go and if there is some success then its a bonus. Along with the assistance of John in the afternoons and Vince in the mornings we are limiting the damage that is occurring on the greens. Lets hope this continues for the remaining months of the summer.
