June Medal

Congratulations to the following members who managed to win the June Medal in warm, calm, but difficult course conditions - as you can see by the winning scores (when conditions are easier, sometimes you need low 60's to win a medal). They also have automatic entry into the Medal of Medals event in November:

Men's and Women's June Medal Winners:

  • Men A Grade - Jake Newcombe (68)
  • Men B Grade - Chris McCauley (69)
  • Men C Grade - Ray Byles (71)
  • Women A Grade - Rebecca Wright (81)
  • Women B Grade - Anne Brady (80)
  • Women C Grade - Libby Newcombe (78)

Turner/De Cean Final Match Play

Well done to the Ladies in playing in the final of the Turner/De Cean Trophy on Saturday 12 June.
I speculated between youth and experience in the previous golfing news.

It was a close match. The experienced team was 1 upcoming to the 18th hole. I watched this last hole from the sidelines. It certainly could have gone either way to square the match. But experience won on the day.

Congratulations to Sue Marsh/Mindy Ross (pictured right) who won 2 up against Kendell Hunt/Libby Newcombe.

It is great to have a young female player as a member of our club. Perhaps we will see her rise to winning many more important matches as we did with Kendell Hunt over the years.

On a sad note, our Women members (and I'm sure our male members) were saddened by the passing of one of our 'family'.  Lyn Dredge had been a golfing member for quite a few years.  She passed away overnight on the 9/10June.  She was 67 years old.  Lyn had an association with the Club for over 30 years, with her brother Glen and father Doug also past long-term members. We wish to pass on our condolences to her family and friends. RIP

Cosgrove Whear Quarterfinal Results

Some exciting / close matches was the order of the day in this handicap Match Play event last Saturday. David McDermott had a strong win over Bill Bell 4/3; Darin Leis had an excellent win over Duncan Skinner 1 up; Shaun Cahill also had a close 1 up win over Greg Nonnenmacher; while the old fox, Lincon McLaren had a strong win over Wayne Harris 4/3.

Semi-final matchups this Saturday (11.18am) will see Lincon play Shaun, while David and Darin will play off for a spot in the final.

Masters Pennant Report

Round 4 - V Bardwell Valley at Bardwell
After a very strong win at home the week before, the Camden ADMARK/Camden Tyres Service Masters Team played well away from home for a strong 7 1/2 to 1/2 win. On a tricky and short course, the team managed to cope well and come away with a win. Currently, Camden and Campbelltown are undefeated so it will be a big test next week against Campbelltown away.

Individual Scores:
Darren Cummins - 3/1 win Greg Matheson - 2/1 win Chris Zanoni- square David Jansen- 2/1 win Rob Bolton - 5/4 win Duncan Skinner - 7/6 win Noel Wood - 7/5 win Neville Hoskin - 3/2 win

Round 5 - V Campbelltown at Campbelltown
This was always going to be a vital game in the team's prospects of winning the group stage. Unfortunately, the team did not perform to expectations and struggled away from home losing 5
1/2 to 2 1/2 . It has made the equation quite simple for next week at home against Campbelltown- we must win with a score of equal to or better than 5 to 3. This can be done - we just need to play well.

Individual Results:

  • Darren Cummins - square
  • Greg Matheson - 5/4 win
  • Chris Zanoni - 1 up win
  • David Jansen - 5/4 loss
  • Rob Bolton - 3/1 loss
  • Duncan Skinner - 1 down loss Noel Wood - 3/1 loss
  • Gary Hunt - 2 down loss

Andrew Nicholls

Congratulations

Recently, the Antill Cup was held - and we had a 'Camden winner'!

Andrew Nicholls (pictured right) won the nett event and is pictured below with a very impressive trophy.

Well done Andrew!

Jack Newton Junior Golf

Camden and Campbelltown Golf Clubs hosted the Macarthur Junior Masters last weekend. Players ranging in age from under 10 to 18 played over two days, with one round at Camden and the other at Campbelltown.

The event always attracts a quality field of up-and-coming champions, with the boys overall winner being Jeffrey Guan from The Australian Golf Club, shooting 3 under par on each day, finishing - 6 for 2 rounds to win by 2 shots over Ali Rashid (NSW Golf Club - 4 under).

The girls were equally impressive with Ann Jang from Toukley Golf Club shooting an even par score over the two rounds to win by 6 strokes.

In the girls 12/13 years Nett, Camden's Libby Newcombe came 2nd in her first ever tournament - a fantastic effort.

In the boys, Robbie Minns tied for 16th, while Noah Graham came a tie 7th in the scratch for boys 12/13 years.

Pam Scutts & Rob Carpenter

A Departure and Thanks

We have had many members over the years who have left our club due to moving home, retirement plans or simply having completed their golf journey.  Some have given great service to the Club, and it is sad to see them move on.  I don't usually make a written comment on these events, but I would like to make the following exception.

Many of our newer members will not be aware of the contribution that Pam Scutts has made to Camden Golf Club.  Pam has been a member of our Club since 1981. She has been a Board Member, Club Treasurer, worked behind the bar when the Club was in financial difficulty in the 1980's, organised events (including the John Scutts Memorial / Christmas Mixed event for 15 years), won multiple Club Championship events (a 15-time winner of the Women's Foursomes Championship with three different partners) and has broadly been a dedicated member of our Club.

Pam and husband Rob Carpenter have been travelling from Bella Vista in recent years each Saturday morning to keep a connection with our Club - (the 5am departures were probably wearing a bit thin).  After 40 years of membership, Pam and Rob have decided to make their local course their home course. Castle Hill Golf Club is no 'Royal Studley', but it's 'not a bad track'.

Thanks for the commitment and love of our club.  We hope you both come and play here when you can.  If you see Pam or Rob this weekend or next, have a chat.

Around the Course

We have a number of members who assist the club by volunteering their time to make a difference.  The 'volunteer group', Arthur Kelly, the corella chasers, Ronnie Dewar and Brian Thorn pushing the field along on a Saturday or spotting on the 10th hole and many other notables helping out.  A special thanks this week to long term member Ken Bellman for the work he has done around the course recently.  As mentioned previously, Ken repaired all of our sand boxes on each hole.  Under the guidance of Justin Bradbury, he has now been working on the lower branches on many of the trees around the course, ensuring members can firstly find their ball in the tree line, then enable a swing when previously this was not an option. So - thanks Kenny.

Cameron Banks

Cameron will be involved in a number of events during his traineeship.  Many members would be interested in how he performs in them, including the Trainee Championships last week (he was not happy with his finish in that one).

The following link is one way of keeping up with his journey.
