Women's Final Vicky Beaven Matchplay

The final of the Women's handicap match play was played on Saturday 21st November, in a highly exciting dual. After going out to an early lead, Bernadette Johnston was caught by Patricia Gleeson and with the final hole completed, the match was all square. Players headed down the first extra hole, with Patricia prevailing on the 19th. Well done to both Ladies in an excellent final.

Camden Super Senior's Report - 23/11/2020

After last week results, we had a chance for a go forward this week to the next round of the Super Senior's Final's. We had made it to the last 8 in this Sydney / Newcastle / Wollongong event - a fantastic effort.

Our opposition was Cumberland who played some good golf to reach the same stage as Camden. The game was played at Ryde Parramatta Golf Club on a course that was in great condition. However, things did not go to plan as we would have liked. Cumberland won 6 1/2 to 1 1/2.

The following is a list of random issues that I believe impacted on the Camden team to some degree. This is not sour grapes from me, but a realistic summary of events as I saw them.

1) Coronvirus: - Time delays causing various events to be delayed or disrupted - of course this impacted all teams, but we had many disruptions to our team.

2) Bernie Allport who we lost at the start of the season with complications from Pneumonia.

3) Danny Senko is still unable to play due to a back issue.

4) Tony Vellacott who had replaced Danny played just one game and now has a back problem.

5) Our new SS player Robert Zelesco was playing in Tasmania and was hoping to be balloted out of the Seniors final day but it appears a change of events required Bob to play Sunday. No hope of Bob returning in time to play.

6) Wayne Shaw's son was married very recently and so Wayne and wife decided to go on holidays as well, albeit to a separate location but not home.

7) Joe Smuk is currently waiting for an operation, but still played some good golf.

8) Joe's partner on the day was Brian Thorn who was a reserve player and was slipped into the 3rd position to cover an empty slot without interrupting the team from last week. Brian had surgery last Friday three days before we played. Thanks Brian.

9) Neville Smith who due to an accident some time ago has had several years off from playing but over the last month has put in the practice and the Captain "Nev Hoskin" felt he was competitive enough to play in the team.

10) With all of the issues that have arisen over the past several months and in particular the past several days Neville no doubt has had several sleep interrupted nights.

As the Manager of the team I could not ask for a better group of players to represent Camden and hope next year they can all try out for the team again but also, I hope to see a couple of new faces trying to make the team. (Must be 65yrs old on the date of play).

Before signing off I would like to thank the Camden Golf Club, Gary Hunt Camden Captain, Donna Bernard GM, Stuart Meani (Camden Pro), Team Captain Neville Hoskin and last but not least Gary Campbell from CAMPBELLTOWN COOLROOMS.

Gary and the Coolrooms have been the Super Senior Pennant's teams sponsors for eight years and we hope for a few more years to come. Thanks Gary.

Peter Legge, Team Manager

From a Camden Golf Club perspective, I'm sure we would like to congratulate the team on their achievements this year. With no disrespect to other Pennant teams from our club, I have no doubt that our most regularly successful team in Pennants over the past 5 years has been our Super Senior team, reaching the knockout stage every year. Just goes to show that as Camden players get older (65 years plus), they get better.

Around the Course

I hope all players are enjoying the slower greens at the moment. It is very clear that scores have improved massively since the renovations, with upwards of 46 points (and sometimes 55) being the standard for those wishing to win. Last Saturday in the Men's comp, 54 players got 36 points or better, Thursday's Men's competition - 56 players achieved 36 points or more, while the previous Saturday it was 63 players. The Ladies are also enjoying the change of pace. But it won't last. Even thought the cutting height will be higher than during winter, expect the greens to be a lot quicker and firmer in the coming weeks.

  • Another hole in one - Warren Cullen achieved this great feat on the sixth hole last Thursday. Camden members are just sooooo clever. Well done Warren.
  • Challenge of challenges is this Thursday, 3/12 for the men.
  • Medal of medals for women and men this coming Saturday, 5/12 for all those who won a medal this year. An invitation to Presentation Night is 'up for grabs'.
  • Men's Summer Cup is on the 12th December for all B Grade players.
  • Saturday 19th - Camden Golf Club Christmas Ambrose - 'book in' this Thursday Night for this event - Big prizes, Xmas hams, wine etc to be won.
  • Wednesday 16th December - Women's Xmas event. Shotgun starts am and pm.
  • Players wishing to play in next year's Mixed Pennant team please note: we have an expression of interest sheet located on the club notice board - please add your name.
  • Men's Major Pennants - players interested in representing the club in Major Pennants please add your details on the information sheet on the notice board - if it isn't currently there, it will be very soon.
  • The most commonly broken rules in golf - there are 8 of them. Watch the attached:

Presentation Night: A reminder to members who have been invited to attend the evening on Monday, December 7th, to RSVP by the 3rd. The event time frame is a 6.30pm arrival for a 7pm start.

The Corellas are back and causing grief:

Just when we feel that the greens are on the way back after renovations, the birds have decided to return and make life difficult for us. Any members interested in helping on' bird patrol' for the late afternoons, please contact the office who will pass on details to Peter Legge, who is coordinating our plan of attack. The 8th green has become their first target, while other greens are not free from likely attack.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of one of Camden Golf Club's greatest players this week. Kevin Franzman was a 9 time club champion in most of the years between 1957 to 1971. In fact, he would probably have won on more occasions had a severe back injury not prevented him from playing at a relatively young age. Our condolences go to his family and friends.

Camden Golf Club History Book:

As previously mentioned, a small group of members are currently in the process of attempting to complete a book on the history of our club. A number of past and present members have so far contributed to our storyline. We are very keen to receive further information from members, particularly those who have been at the club for a long period of time.

If you have some information that you would like to share with us about the club, the Professionals, the administration, or just some funny or not funny stories from the past, please contact us - Colleen Versluis, Kim De Cean, Gary Hunt or Greg Matheson. If you would like to email - gregory.matheson6@gmail.com.
