The Super Senior Pennant competition has recommenced after it was postponed after a brief start a few months ago. Our over 65 year old team looked splendid for the photo shoot prior to the tee off at Campbelltown Golf Course.
The following report was provided by team manager, Peter Legge:
Hi All,
We were the host team for the first round at Camden. (Division 3 is 5 Teams) due to the Wollongong team and another team pulling out before we were able to get started. Yesterday Campbelltown hosted the event and looked after the day very well with food and drinks and a course that has improved their layout and greens.
Yesterday was no exception with two (2) new players to SS they were Peter Bonfield and Bob Zelesco. We were looking at fielding a team that may win or at least pick up a draw.
It was nice to restart the comp after a 2-month layoff.
Camden was in the second section to hit off, playing against Wallacia a team we have met several times in the past and mostly with a win or a draw. Whilst the Wallacia team does have a couple of older players, they do play some good golf and are hard players to beat.
At the half way point the results were looking reasonably good for a draw or a win. Nev Hoskin +1, Peter Bonfield -1, Bob Zelesco +1, Danny Senko -3, Ken Bellman -4, Wayne Shaw +1 and last but not least Noel Beattie +2.
Well the next 9 holes change a little with Dennis Gallagher (Wallacia Manager sitting beside me in the cart for the round). Dennis was pushing for a draw, me for a win or at least a draw. At least we both enjoyed each other's company.
As we were closing onto the finishing holes, Noel and Wayne finished with a win each, I started to feel that a win was not out of reach. As I saw the remaining teams finishing Ken & Danny both had cut their losses down to 1 down with 2 to play a good finish but no prizes.
Nev and Peter had finished their games and headed to the remaining two players Bob playing Peter Low from Wallacia on the last hole.
Joe had played his usually steady game for a good win and then providing some support for Bob in particular the last game where all eyes were on these last two players.
Each player hit good shots off the tee and then proceeded to hit their balls over the water and on or very near the green. It was Peter Low to putt first. A down-hill putt and turning away from the hole finishing 1 to 11/2 metres away from the hole. This left Bob a winning shot of some several metres from the pin but off the green and also needed to leave the ball nearer the hole for a half. As fate would have it Bob finished approximately just outside his opponent with a different line. It was Bob's turn to putt but Bob missed the putt. His opponent did not. Thus losing the last hole.
