Foursomes Championship Round 1 Report

Players were greeted by wild and windy conditions, making swinging a golf club difficult, let alone putting on the fast greens.  Scoring was difficult for all pairs, with some big numbers the order of the day.

A Grade Women:  Shelly Chapman and Candice Bell have a commanding 12 shot lead in Scratch and 6 stroke lead in Nett over Maxine Malcolm and Rebecca Wright and look to be in an unbeatable position.

B Grade Women:  Colleen Versluis and Sue Purnell are in a comfortable position in the Nett, but are holding a very narrow lead over a number of teams in the Scratch, with Lyn Bullock and Esther Pershouse chasing in both events.

A Grade Men:  Surprise first round leaders, Rob Carpenter and Greg Matheson lead by 3 strokes in Scratch over Lindsay Hudson and Brett Moyes, with 8 teams within 3 more strokes - so this one is wide open.  In Nett, Rob and Greg have a similar 3 shot lead over Greg and Peter Nonnenmacher.

B Grade Men:  Garry Wackett and Stephen Humphreys have a commanding 6 stroke lead in the Nett over George Zografakis and Ian Martin, while in the gross, they also lead, although 6 teams are within 5 strokes.

C Grade Men:  Scott Ireland and Richard Lowe have a commanding 6 stroke lead in the Nett over Bradley Keys and Ian Stoddart, while they are also leading the gross by 2 strokes over the same pairing.

Let's hope for calmer conditions on Saturday for the final round.  Don't forget, you only apologise on the first tee.

Foursomes Championship - Round 2 and Final Report

Players were met with very different conditions for Round 2.  A very cold start, followed by a delightful, calm and sunny day made for better scoring (or did it?).  The final results were as follows, after adding the two rounds together.

A Grade Women:  The inevitable result after a strong week 1 performance, saw Shelley Chapman and Candice Bell run away with a strong win in both Scratch and Nett.  A huge 19 stroke win over Rebecca Wright and Maxine Malcolm in the gross and a solid 8 stroke victory over the same pairing in the Nett.

B Grade Women:  Yvonne Day and Kim De Cean had a strong 5 stroke victory in the Scratch event over the team of Wendy Hyndman and Patricia Gleeson.  In the Nett event, Colleen Versluis and Sue Purnell held onto their solid lead after round 1 to claim victory by 4 strokes over Yvonne and Kim.

A Grade Men:  After the shock of leading after Round 1, the team of Rob Carpenter and Greg Matheson held it together in the final round for a 4 stroke victory over two teams - with Mitch Arnold and Stuart Bate recording second place on a count back from Lindsay Hudson and Brett Moyes.  The Nett had the same result, with Rob and Greg winning over Mitch and Stuart, with Fraser and Jake Newcombe a very close third on a countback.

B Grade Men:  This event had some wild swings from Round 1 to Round 2.  Ultimately David McDermott and Joel Van der Weegen won both the Scratch and Nett, defeating Ian Martin and George Kografakis by three shots in the Nett (on a countback from the round one leaders Stephen Humphreys and Garry Wackett) while Talby Elmoh and Jayden Shaw were runners up in the gross.

C Grade Men:  Certainly the closest finish of all events in Scratch, with two teams finishing on the same score.  Alan Piggott and Don Bogg will need a playoff against Richard Lowe and Scott Ireland to determine the gross champions.  In the Nett, Richard and Scott won by a comfortable 5 strokes from Alan and Don.

For many (maybe not), it is sad to see the end of the Foursomes season.  The next big event will be the Club Championships - a further 6 weeks down the track.  This is when we can only blame ourselves.

Justin Bradbury's Superintendent's Report

Course Superintendent Justin Bradbury's August Greens Report is out now.

Click on the link below to keep up-to-date with what Justin and his talented greens team have been up to out on the course.

Frosty August Morning

General

  • We still need to be careful when heading down the 8th gully - an angry magpie swoops.
  • While on birds, the crows near the 12th green have been stealing food from golf bags and out of carts - they apparently can unzip pockets (if you believe some stories).
  • Now for snakes - a snake was seen by the guys last week on the 8th approach crossing over to the cart path near 11 tee. It's all happening at Royal Studley.
  • Cart dirvers are asked to avoid driving through the areas that have been top dressed (particularly in the 8th and 12th gullys) - we need to give these areas every opportunity to get some grass growing.
  • A message from the Pro Shop - Members are required to book in for social play or risk missing out.  They must also follow the Pro Shop's instructions which tee to hit off from.  And our pet hate - play in a group of 4! not 6, not 8 and not 10.
  • We have spoken previously about the rules regarding the use of the driving range.  Recently we had a member struck by a ball while collecting balls.  All members are reminded that the driving range must be used in a manner that has the safety of other users as a priority.  If a player is collecting balls, all other players would be expected to either collect at the same time, or play completely away from the member on the range collecting.

Golden Jubilee

Camden Golf Club History

A small committee is currently undertaking the task of preparing a book about our Club.  In 2000, the year of our Golden Jubilee (50 years), a historical reflection was researched and presented by a team including Ray Herbert, Esther Pershouse, Sue New and Gary Linford.  A new book is planned to celebrate our 75th anniversary in a few years, although this publication is hoped to be completed before 2025.

The committee, consisting of Colleen Versluis, Kim De Cean, Gary Hunt and Greg Matheson are unsure at this stage where the journey will take us and what will actually be in our final product.  What we do know, however, is that we need input from our members (both past and present).  To commence our project, we would like to invite members to contribute their stories, thoughts, memories and contributions.  We need information - some of our 'paper' history has been lost, so we need individuals to come forward to assist in this process.

If you would like to participate, you can send an email, make a phone call or just have a chat to any of the above committee members.  If you don't come to us, we may well come to you.  What do we want to know?  Anything that relates to the course, Club, things you have done to help the Club, membership of teams, committees; even a story that you have always wanted to share about golf at Camden.

No story is unimportant to us.  We hope you will contribute.
